Add to Memories Tell a Friend
It was Friday, August 24th 1988 when Danielle Maria made her debut in the world. Born the youngest child and only daughter to David and Maria Perez, Danielle's birth came as more than a simple blessing. Her mother had suffered complications in her fifth month of pregnancy after a tumble down the stairs. Doctors had bedridden Maria for the remaining months of her pregnancy and were uncertain if the Danielle would even make it to see the world.

Growing up, Danielle was always known as an ambitious and extremely friendly girl. She enjoyed entertaining people when every she was given the chance. Whether it was in the middle of the playground, on the bus ride home or in the comfort of her family home, Danielle would be either singing or dancing for anyone that was around. As for extra-curricular activities anything she could convince her parents to sign her up for, she was there. From dance classes, vocal lessons, piano, gymnastics, softball and even beauty pagents. Danielle was eager to try it all.

Anyone that knows Danielle well knows that she is very much a girly-girl. It's not too often that you'll find her leaving the house without her hair done and makeup on. She's always up on the latest fashion trend, loves spending time at the mall(even if she has no reason to go), always has her nails done and loves to gossip about who's dating who.

Some of Danielle's best memories come from her childhood. Most summers were spent up in Connecticut on her grandparents farm. This was one way that her parents tried to keep her and her brother off the streets and out of trouble. While at her grandparents she loved helping her grandmother in the garden and learning how to prepare some of her favorite foods right from scratch. When she wasn't in the garden, she would join her grandfather and brother as they tended to the horses and cattle. She had one special bond with one of the stallions named "Thunder" and often thought that he understood her as she spoke sharing her most inner thoughts.

If asked who she thought of as the ideal role model, Danielle would instantly say her mother without even having to think. She always saw her mother as a strong, independent, caring, well rounded woman who always knew the right thing to say at exactly the right moment. It was her mother who was her best friend. No matter what the issue, Danielle would immediately confide in her mother for the answers that she was looking for. Naturally there was the tendancy to disagree like any other mother-daughter relationship but in the end Danielle knew that her mother was always right. Unfortunately though, she never had the opportunity to tell her mother that.

A few months after Danielle had started high school, her mother and her had gotten into a disagreement when she wasn't permitted to attend a local party that the rest of her friends would be attending later that evening. After a small yelling match, Danielle ran out of the house slamming the door and made her way to school. Going against her parents orders, she still joined her friends after school and went to the party. Hours later she had returned home, noticing that the family car had been replaced by a police cruiser sitting in the driveway. As she entered the house, she was greeted by two police officers, her brother and her father. Danielle knew instantly by the solemn expressions on all their faces that something was extremely wrong. It was at that very moment that Danielle felt her heart shatter. Her mother had met her fate when she went out searching for Danielle when she didn't come home from school. Hit head on by a drunk driver, her mother never had a chance.

The death of her mother was difficult on the entire family. In some eyes, it was Maria who held the family together. Within months, her father's drinking problem became public knowledge and eventually resulted in him losing his job. Responsibilties of paying the bills on time and looking after the house now became Danielle and her brother's role but without jobs of their own, money quickly ran out. It was then that their father decided to hit the road, leaving the two of them to fend for themselves. With her grandparents unable to take them in now due to their own age and ailments, foster homes would soon be where Danielle and her brother would call home.

After being abandoned by her father, Danielle had a difficult time trusting anyone other than her brother. Considering their ages at the time, neither Danielle or her brother believed that anyone would want to adopt them. After all, everyone knows that babies are the highlight of all adoptions. Within a few months, however luck did come their way and were fortunate to have a couple take interest in keeping them together. This couple however is not exactly how Danielle and her brother ever pictured a new family life to be. The reality of it all would be that this new family life for the Perez children would mean inheriting not one but two dad's. Although it was another big adjustment for Danielle and her brother to adjust to their new family, it beat being moved around from home to home as they previously had been.

Today as she looks back on her teenage years, Danielle feels blessed having had the opportunity of growing up with the experience of having same sex parents. It opened her eyes to many evils that truly do lurk in this world. She is and will be forever grateful to both men who opened their hearts and home to both her and her brother.

Following graduation, Danielle was torn between staying in Massachusetts or branching out to experience a whole new path all on her own. After working to save up her own money for the first two years, Danielle did decide to take the plunge and move to Galveston, Texas when she was nineteen. Now almost four years later, Danielle is comfortably settled into her daily lifestyle on the south Texan coast. She is currently a student at Texas A&M university where she is majoring in marine biology and to make ends meet she also works as a waitress at a local bar "The Lounge".
